For four years, five camps, and hundreds of hours of pure joy, Wild Jammin' Women music camps have brought music, empowerment, and community to the women who have attended. Now, regretfully, we've come to an ending, and have decided to put future camps on hold. This has not been an easy decision. But our Queen Bee Masa needs a break from the primary leadership role and other committee members simply do not have the time and focus to take up the slack.
However, we are not abandoning this marvelous community that has emerged through these years. We are still passionate about "women making music" - just on a smaller scale for now. Consequently, we are planning to hold periodic afternoon or one day workshops, exploring different formats, but all embracing the ideals and enthusiasm that have grown from our camps at deBenneville with Judy Fjell.
The following are some of our ideas for the coming year. And of course, we are always looking for new ideas. Please contact us with your ideas and comments.
Music Retreats at Spirit Point Ranch
In late January of 2007, our WJW board visited
Spirit Point Ranch in Escondido, and immediately fell in love with both the beauty of the land and the buildings
and the identical twin sisters (both artists) who have made it such a special place. The place calls out for a day of creative and meditative endeavors with music, words, and all other things that might inspire us.
We are planning our first such retreat on March 24th, 2007. So mark your calendars!
Unfortunately we must limit registration to fifteen, because of the intimate nature of the place. But hopefully this will be just the first of many retreats.
The format of this retreat will be flexible. Some sessions that we may be offering include:
- Found Poetry / Found Music - Carolyn Terry will guide us through combined poetry and music presentations. Bring your own poetry or your favorite poems.
-
Book-making with Carolyn Terry. Create an easy-to-make soft-cover book to keep handy in your guitar case, back pocket, etc.
- A walking meditation with drums...
- Joyful Notes - melody improvisation with guitars, voice, harmonicas, or anything else. Bring your instrument!
- Slo Jams... Easy Jams.... Song circles...
- And more! Bring your own ideas!
Music "Jam" Afternoons
We are really excited about this possible format for a great day of women making music. We will come together with all our varied instruments. Various leaders will have come prepared with different songs (of different genres). Groups will form for each song. Each group will prepare for an hour or so, creating a unique arrangement with the available instruments and voices. At the end, we will all come together and perform for each other.
A great chance to learn how to play with others and be part of a unique performance.
