The Magic of a Music Camp!
|
|
|
Notice! In early 2007, Wild Jammin' Women realized it would not be possible to continue our music camps at Camp DeBenneville. Although we hope that some day we will be able to hold another multi-day camp in another location with artistic director Judy Fjell, the immediate future sees us scaling down to single day or afternoon workshops in various locations in San Diego. Please check out our
New Directions page for our ideas and plans for the future.
History
"Wild Jammin' Women" is a music camp for women in Southern California, inspired and directed by noted singer-songwriter, choral director, and vocal instructor Judy Fjell.
Judy created her first music camp in 1986 in Montana. Her mission: to provide a supportive environment for women to explore and make music together. Her belief is that weall have a singing voice just waiting to be discovered and nurtured. With acoustic accompaniment, our songs can build community, empower women, and change the world. A northern California camp,WOMAMU was incorporated in 1993 and has held camps twice yearly ever since.
Masa Goetz attended Judy's Summersing camp in 2003 and came back to San Diego determined to bring Judy to southern California. With her as our "Queen Bee" and guiding light, Wild Jammin' Women produced our first camp in the spring of 2004 in the beautiful San Bernadino mountains in southern California northeast of Los Angeles.
What to Expect
There will be singing games, song circles, rounds singing, voice care information, and a capella harmonies for all. Campers are encouraged to bring guitars, mandolins, fiddles, harmonicas, drums, dulcimers, spoons and kazoos. There'll be Tai Chi for the early morning risers and late night song cirles for the night owls.
Workshops taught by guest instructors (and Judy Fjell) cover singing techniques, guitar instruction, harmonica basics, improvisation, song-writing, and much, much more. There is a camper-led "no-mike" night where campers can share their latest song, play their guitar, share stories, share themselves.
Activities are designed to free up out-of-practice musicians and inspire any"wannabees" who feel they have been hanging back for too long. Everyone, no matter their ability or training, has a place at this camp.
